"Whereas many artists... were working to metaphorically "break down" the limits of the gallery wall, Gary Hill, in his first video installation, did so concretely. Using a video camera, Hill framed part of the surface of an outside wall to the same size as a monitor. He then recorded himself as he cut into the various layers of the wall until he broke through to the other side.
